I think our own journey may be somewhat similar. Till we actually discover for ourselves the extent to which our brains are conditioned, our seeing is distorted. And it is from this distortion that we live and inquire; have dialogues and so on. Blissfully unaware! The discovery that we are on the ‘wrong train’ perhaps comes only with the understanding of the ‘self’ and what it means to be completely free of the ‘self’. Am using that word ‘self’ to refer to that collection of past, thought, identification, fear etc which make up the ‘self’. Only that amazing happening of being revealed to oneself can perhaps bring about the freedom to see without distortion.
That is the beauty of J Krishnamurti’s teaching. Maybe it is all about making it possible for a seeing that is flawless and free of distortion. A seeing where the brain cells are so ‘healthy’ that only a seeing of ‘what is’ happens. And that seeing perhaps is action. ‘We are talking about cessation of the self, not self improvement.’ This perhaps is the essence, core, heart of J Krishnamurti’s teaching. The excerpt below from his talk at Madras on 4 January 1986 is worth exploring in depth.
‘Creation is something that is most holy; that is the most sacred thing in life and, if you have made a mess of your life, change it. Change it today, not tomorrow. If you are uncertain, find out why and be certain. If your thinking is not straight, think straight, logically. Unless all that is prepared, all that is settled, you can’t enter into this world, into the world of creation.’
