We had a program at our Centre on 10 November which included the screening of a 30 minute film titled ‘The conditioned self’. Directed by Michael Mendizza, the film featured J Krishnamurti, David Bohm and Saral Bohm.

The screening was followed by an interactive dialogue. Is the self (me) anything more than a construct of thought? Is conditioning different from the self (me)? Can conditioning be dissolved completely?
After the dialogue, we read through chapter 2 in the book Commentaries on living series 1 titled ‘Identification’. Why do we identify? This is closely related to the issue of conditioning.
An interesting day of exploration. A dialogue is never easy as words are involved and inevitably there is often a drift away from the core of the exploration. Individuals seem unable to completely drop their own ‘filters’ and focus on the beauty and simplicity of K’s insights.
Even so, imperfect as it may be, dialogue does provoke a sort of churning which may later penetrate our own filters that obstruct a full seeing. Our preoccupation with ourselves often prevents the intensity in dialogue from flowering. How else does one explain the complexity we bring as participants to the sheer simplicity of K’s insights?
